Alanya (also historically known as Alaiye or Coracesium) is a purpose-built cruise port on Turkey's southern Mediterranean coast, approximately 138 km (85.7 mi) east of Antalya. The port sits directly below the iconic 13th-century Seljuk fortress and adjacent to the historic Red Tower (Kızıl Kule), placing it at the geographic and cultural heart of one of Turkey's premier resort cities. The terminal is exclusively operated by ALİDAŞ Co. Inc. under a concession agreement with the Turkish government, and it serves only international cruise ships and the Kyrenia (Cyprus)–Alanya fast ferry route — no cargo, vehicle ferries, or naval traffic share the facility. Cruise line shore excursions from this port typically benchmark in the USD $60–$120 range for half-day cultural tours (castle, Red Tower, bazaar) and USD $80–$160 for full-day regional excursions to Aspendos, Side, or the Taurus Mountains; independent operators available at the port gate offer comparable itineraries at materially lower prices. You should confirm current pricing with your cruise line and local operators before your visit. In adverse weather, ships may divert to the nearby port of Antalya — monitor ship announcements on the morning of arrival.

On exiting the Alidaş terminal building through the gate, passengers step directly into a working harbor environment with an immediate transition into a tourist-facing streetscape. Taxis and dolmuş position themselves at or just outside the gate, and tour operator representatives typically station themselves nearby on ship-call days. The Red Tower is immediately visible to the east, providing clear orientation. The harbor promenade runs along the waterfront in both directions and requires no navigational decisions — the route to the city center, bazaar, and beaches is linear and intuitive. Street vendors and carpet shop solicitations begin within the first 100 meters (0.1 mi) outside the gate; this is standard for Turkish harbor districts and does not constitute a safety concern, but passengers who prefer not to engage should move purposefully. In peak summer heat (June–August), the walk to the castle or upper city in direct sun is physically demanding — plan for shade breaks and carry water.

Alanya's cuisine is the product of layered civilizations — Seljuk, Ottoman, and nomadic Yörük — converging at the intersection of the Mediterranean Sea and the Taurus Mountains. Unlike the purely olive oil-based diet of western Anatolian coasts, Alanya's table bridges two distinct worlds: the light, herb-forward seafood dishes drawn from centuries of fishing in the eastern Mediterranean, and the butter- and goat meat-rich stews that descend from Yörük pastoral traditions in the highlands above the city. The result is a cuisine that cannot be replicated in Antalya or Side. Cruise passengers who eat only at the harbor-facing tourist strip miss Alanya's food entirely; the genuine cuisine lives in the small ev mutfağı (home kitchen) eateries clustered around Hükümet Caddesi and the old bazaar quarter near Kızıl Kule.

Alanya sits on Turkey's Mediterranean coast and has built a genuine reputation as a shopping destination rooted in regional textile and leather production. The Alanya Bazaar () is pedestrianised, partly covered, and less than a 15-minute walk from the cruise terminal — a practical first stop for cruise passengers. Atatürk Boulevard () runs parallel and carries more modern boutiques and jewellers. Haggling is standard practice at the bazaar and at independent stalls; fixed pricing is the norm only in malls and chain stores. The Alanyum Shopping Centre () on the D-400 highway is accessible by local bus and is known for competitively priced locally made leather and silk goods.

The standard U.S. Customs duty-free personal exemption for returning residents is $800 per person, provided you have been outside the United States for at least 48 hours and have not used the exemption within the past 30 days. The next $1,000 of dutiable goods above the $800 threshold is taxed at a flat 3%. Items above $1,800 are assessed at the standard Harmonized Tariff Schedule rate for their category. Turkey is not an EU member, so EU VAT refund rules do not apply. Turkey does operate a VAT refund scheme for tourists (KDV iade): purchases above a minimum threshold from participating shops displaying the 'Tax Free' sign are eligible for a VAT refund on departure from Turkey, typically processed at Antalya Airport (the nearest international airport to Alanya). Counterfeit branded goods — which are openly sold in the bazaar — are subject to seizure by CBP regardless of declared value. Do not purchase or attempt to import fake branded merchandise. The Turkish Lira (TRY) is the official currency. Euros are accepted at the majority of tourist-facing shops, restaurants, and tour operators in Alanya. US dollars are accepted at many but not all establishments — less universally than euros. You will almost always receive a more favourable effective price by paying in Turkish Lira, particularly at bazaar stalls and for smaller purchases. Credit cards are accepted at larger shops, malls, and established restaurants, but bazaar stalls, market vendors, and smaller independent shops operate on a cash-preferred or cash-only basis. Carry Turkish Lira for market stalls and street vendors. ATMs are available at and near the cruise terminal and in the commercial centre approximately 10 minutes on foot from the port. Non-bank ATMs (found near tourist areas) carry higher surcharge fees — use bank-branded ATMs where possible. For authentic local goods, the Alanya Bazaar and adjacent streets are the primary destination. The bazaar is open daily and closes to traffic, making it safe for pedestrian browsing. Atatürk Boulevard carries more established jewellers and leather shops with fixed pricing. The Alanyum Shopping Centre carries mall retail at transparent fixed prices and is the best option for shoppers who prefer a no-haggle environment.
